The Star Alliance has confirmed that the new T2 terminal at London Heathrow Airport will officially open on June 4 after investing £ 2.5 billion ($3.8 billion) in upgrades. United Airlines will be the first airline to enter the remodeled terminal.
According to the Star Alliance, 23 member airlines will operate from London Heathrow Airport, which is the airport with the largest number of member airlines of the alliance. 12 million Star Alliance passengers are expected to stop at Heathrow every year.
Heathrow currently handles 121 daily Star Alliance flights to 45 destinations in 25 countries.
The new T2 terminal can handle 20 million passengers per year, "but the terminal is designed to expand as needed," Justin Erbacci, Star Alliance's vice president of customer experience and technology, said at a media briefing.
The Erbacci said that the alliance "expects that the operating costs of our member airlines will be significantly reduced," which has become a synergy for all member airlines under the same roof.
"Over the past two years, we have worked very hard to bring together all of our member airlines into the terminal," Erbacci said, adding that no one else in the industry has yet achieved a similar project.
Star Alliance member airlines, which are now located in three Heathrow terminals, will move to T2 from June 4 to October.
Aer Lingus, Germanwings and Virgin Atlantic Airways will also operate from T2.
Terminal T2, Heathrow's first terminal, was closed in 2009 and demolished in 2010 after 54 years of operation. The new T2 terminal is the latest stage in a £ 11 billion transformation of Heathrow. Airport Luggage Trolley Report]
